Projects : Power Barges

Alion Science and Technology, a Dynamic Power Technologies Group company, has supported the design and construction of barge-mounted combustion turbine electric power generating plants, including both simple and combined cycle arrangements. Representative examples include:

155MW Simple Cycle Power Barges for Consolidated Edison (Con Ed),
“The Gowanus Barges”

Structural design and construction supervision for four barges outfitted with eight GE Frame 5 heavy-duty combustion turbines and mooring systems each. Services included detailed structural design of the barges and superstructure, including the foundations for the combustion turbines, transformers and other barge-mounted machinery and equipment. This was the first marine installation for equipment of this type and included essentially a zero permissible deflection between the turbine and generator units similar to installation specifications for on-shore units.

174MW Simple Cycle Power Barges, for Consolidated Edison,
“The Narrows Barges”

Structural design and construction supervision for two barges, each fitted with eight GE Frame 5 turbines for. These power barges were generally similar to the 155MW barges, with the exception that the turbines had higher rated outputs.

121MW Simple Cycle Power Barge “Electron” for Electrobras

Structural design and construction supervision for one barge outfitted with six GE Frame 5 combustion turbine generation units. This barge was configured and reinforced to permit a safe 5,000-mile ocean voyage for delivery to its final destination in Brazil.

210MW Combined Cycle Power Barge for Smith Enron

Structural design and construction supervision of a steam-cycle barge for a two-barge combined cycle plant sited at Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. The 80MW GE Frame 7 gas turbine generator unit was mounted on an existing deck barge reinforced in accordance with the design prepared by Raytheon. The steam cycle barge included the mounting of a heat recovery steam generator, two oil fired utility boilers, a 130MW steam turbo generator and the power plant control building.

46MW Simple Cycle Power Barge for Sabah Shipyard

Consulting engineering was provided to Parsons Power in the design and construction of a simple cycle power barge, utilizing a Westinghouse 251?B11 combustion turbine generator. This barge was delivered to a site at Mombasa, Kenya, where it operates, afloat, at a sheltered site. The barge is 229 ft. long x 60 ft. beam x 16 ft. deep. The combustion turbine generator is supported by a foundation that is integral with the primary structure of the barge.
