| Projects : Mine Subsidence Evaluation
DAppolonia, a Dynamic Power Technologies Group company, conducted a mine subsidence potential evaluation prior to the development of an 85-MW coal waste-fired cogeneration plant near Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. The plant owner and developer wanted to construct the facility immediately adjacent the fuel supply to minimize handling costs. Two coal seams beneath the site had recently been mined by the longwall method, so the potential existed for continued ground movement at the surface. DPT personnel conducted subsurface explorations to characterize the mine overburden and developed a predictive model for the maximum additional ground movement that could occur within the areas adjacent the 200 acres occupied by the fuel source. Based on these analyses, the specific site for the generating facility was selected, and structures were oriented and located to coincide with areas of minimum estimated future movement. |
