Projects : CFD Analysis for Gas Turbine Intake

Alion Science and Technology, a Dynamic Power Technologies Group company, designed complex, three-dimensional intakes for a new gas turbine power application. It was critical that pressure losses through the intakes meet specifications, but classical analysis methods could not take into account the influence of the support structure on the airflow. DPT’s engineers used computational fluid dynamics, or CFD, early in the design process to accurately calculate pressure losses and to determine velocities through the intakes.

By modifying one CFD model, a number of similar analyses were efficiently evaluated to obtain a highly efficient design. For example, the model was run both with and without a unique barrier plate upstream of the intake for several wind conditions. It was necessary to model air flowing around the support structure and entering the intake, as well as the airflow within the intake itself because pressure loss was influenced by the free stream air characteristics upstream of the intake.
